Respect your investor and their money. Making them look dumb is an unforgivable sin.
It might be a guessing game at times but you have to figure out what their motivation is for participating in your project and give that to them.
If you won't risk your own money, how can you convince anyone else to do it? Don't back projects that aren't going to be winners and you won't have anything to worry about.
